<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: verdana; text-align: justify;">After thirty years in the darkroom I still experience excitement when I take a roll of film out of the tank, unrolling a bit of it as I hold it up to the light to see if there are images there. Though I understand the science of silver based photography, I am still amazed when I look at each roll of film, fresh from the fixer. I still believe it is magic. My love of this process is why I stubbornly cling to film, the wet darkroom and alternative processes. Each time I walk into my darkroom I never know where I will go that day and it is that not knowing, that process of discovery that preserves my childlike excitement about my art.</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: verdana; text-align: justify;"></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: verdana; text-align: justify;">Several years ago I had become complacent in the darkroom and that spark of excitement had dimmed a bit. Everything seemed very predictable to me with the chemistry and camera equipment that I was using. I had left the newspaper business to raise my children and though I had no desire to return to the pressure of deadlines, I craved more unpredictability and a return to wonder. </div><div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: ";"><span style="font-family: verdana;">Then I bought a Holga, a cheap plastic camera with many flaws. I fell in love with the unassuming toy and the resulting images that are always a surprise. Shortly after my Holga discovery, I took an excellent lith printing workshop from Tim Rudman. Between the unpredictability of the Holga and the many variations in the lith process the excitement in the darkroom was reignited.</span><br />

The resulting images vary in tone and texture, often with smooth highlights adjacent to gritty shadow areas. The variations in tone and texture are a result of the paper choice, initial exposure, and the temperature and maturity of the chemicals. There are enough variables in each darkroom session to guarantee surprise, frustration and hopefully, delight.</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><br />

</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: verdana; text-align: justify;">I have a degree in psychology in addition to my photography degree and studied reinforcement as part of my psychology curriculum. I learned that the most powerful effect on human behavior is achieved by random positive reinforcement. Never knowing when you are going to get the result you want keeps you coming back for more. It becomes addictive and the behavior is difficult to extinguish. Needless to say, the Holga and lith printing are perfect vehicles for creating this phenomenon and I fully admit that I have become addicted to this powerful combo. Some days I come out of the darkroom with little to show for my work and I am very frustrated. However, the knowledge that the next session may be a magical one makes me look forward to the next journey into the dark.</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: verdana; text-align: justify;"></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: verdana; text-align: justify;">I have widened my camera inventory to include other plastic cameras and vintage cameras that I often find at local flea markets or antique shops. Some of the vintage cameras take film that I no longer can buy but some will take slightly modified spools of 120 film. If I can get a roll of film into a camera, I will give it a try.</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: verdana; text-align: justify;"><br />

How interesting can you make a photo for a light bulb sale fundraiser? I embraced the challenge of trying. I reminded myself that what might seem mundane to me was someone else’s fifteen minutes of fame and I needed to treat it that way. <br />
</div><a name='more'></a>Sprinkled among the normal assignments were opportunities to do feature assignments of visiting artists, writers, musicians and politicians. These were my favorite assignments, when I was able to accompany a staff writer and get to know an interesting personality. On breaking news assignments I often had to be aggressive and get in close to get the needed shots. For features, I could be quiet, hang back and let the reporter do the work. I tried to be invisible as the subjects focused on the questions being asked them, preferring candid shots to staged ones. I loved studying through my camera lens the expressions that traveled their faces. The same curiosity that drew me to study psychology served me well in this job. Even now, I am more comfortable blending into the background and quietly observing when I have a camera with me. No better compliment can be paid than someone saying, “Oh, I forgot you were here.”<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;"></div><div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="text-align: justify;"></div><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="text-align: justify;">Outside the newspaper’s studio I did not have the luxury of controlling light so I had to learn through creative exposure and developing to come up with printable images. I always kept some white paperboard and a roll of aluminum foil in my car for emergencies when I needed to bounce some fill light into a scene. I often grabbed someone standing nearby to hold the foil covered board as I shot. If I didn’t have the opportunity to retrieve the foil or board, I wasn’t above seeking out someone with a white shirt and asking them to get in close to the subject, facing the brightest available light so they would act as the fill light. Anything was fair game when pressed for a photo and people were surprisingly accommodating. <br />
<br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="text-align: justify;"></div><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="text-align: justify;">Even in a small city we managed to have some excitement; fires, accidents, murders. When arriving at a chaotic scene it was necessary to conduct photo triage. I assessed what was going on and decided how to best capture it to convey the story to viewers. It was not a conscious act, but rather instinct that kicked in instantly. If the managing editor was holding the presses waiting for a photo, I raced back, developed and printed with wet negatives. Adrenalin was a close friend on those occasions. There was a lot of praying going on when I dumped out the fix and opened the can to see if there was anything on the roll, a whoosh of relief when I saw images. I had the freedom of doing my own editing as I chose what images to pass on to the editor, no contact sheets involved. Working at a newspaper before the advent of digital photography was the most valuable training I have ever had and I got paid for it! I didn’t get paid much, but evidently eventually more than the janitor.<br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="text-align: justify;"></div><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="text-align: justify;">A lot of people would not function well with tight deadlines and stressful conditions but I seemed to thrive on the adrenalin rush. I loved that no two days were alike, that I never knew what each day would require of me. I remembered the days when I worked in a woolen mill during college summers and the monotony that had made mid-terms and finals weeks seem almost pleasant. I was happy to have this job where routine didn’t exist.</div>Vicki Reedhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06108489200487605436noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8891775601682377628.post-77908950880804839092011-03-31T02:29:00.002-07:002012-03-08T03:53:43.487-08:00A Male World<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1pZHllurtW_1mZbz9ER4LCUoa0mZP0CD5-JLgMu-qnvBD8iVt-ZxaRDdd9VBelhQ4d7i3GDrKYYyZ-LN_glck3FVolYfCJMfXhXc_mPIqDY3VNpSSElNKzBrd8Bj1fwakjYiMsC9b1VI/s1600/clown001a.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5591888328887413634" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1pZHllurtW_1mZbz9ER4LCUoa0mZP0CD5-JLgMu-qnvBD8iVt-ZxaRDdd9VBelhQ4d7i3GDrKYYyZ-LN_glck3FVolYfCJMfXhXc_mPIqDY3VNpSSElNKzBrd8Bj1fwakjYiMsC9b1VI/s320/clown001a.jpg" style="cursor: pointer; display: block; height: 320px; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; width: 272px;" /></a> <br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt;"> </span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><a name='more'></a><br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt;">\Back in my naïve youth when I worked for a daily paper I did some stupid things to get a photograph and that second definition of blithely (</span><span style="font-family: "; font-size: 130%; line-height: 115%;">showing a lack of due concern)</span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt;"> could have been applied more than a few times. Scared of heights, l leaned over the sides of high rises with someone holding on to my belt loops to capture firefighters conducting repelling exercises framed by interesting sidewalk patterns, wore a parachute (in case I fell out) and strapped myself to the floor of a small plane with the door off to photograph a parachuting clown. I did barrel rolls, hammerhead stalls and emergency landed in an open cockpit, bi-winged Stearman airplane when the plane suffered a problem with its throttle.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt;">I was a female in a heavily dominated male industry so I always felt it necessary to push myself beyond my safe zone in order to compete or live up to expectations. I am still not sure if the expectations I was trying to fulfill were self imposed or if there indeed was something I needed to prove because of my gender and the times. (70’s/80’s) I do remember some coworkers in the paste up room saying that since I was married and my husband worked, I didn’t need to be paid as much as my male peers doing the same job. I want to point out that I was never shown anything but respect and kindness by the male photographers I worked with. They were helpful, encouraging, and generous with advice and I am eternally grateful to them all.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt;">After several months of editors and writers praising the work I was doing I went into the publisher’s office to ask for a raise. Actually I so loved what I was doing I probably would have worked for free but as a female I felt it was my duty to myself and other women in similar situations to push for something more, to demand fairness. The publisher’s comment to the managing editor was, “Well, she IS the lowest paid person here. Even though she has two degrees, the janitor makes more than she does.” The casualness of the statement made me feel both humiliated and angry. I held my tongue. They gave me the raise.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal"></div><div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="text-align: justify;"><br />
